Ongoing First Aid Training
Building First Aid Confidence
First aid training is not just about holding a certificate. For schools and early-years settings, it is about ongoing staff confidence, safe systems, and inspection-ready governance.
This programme is designed to support organisations beyond initial training, helping leaders demonstrate that first aid arrangements are active, proportionate, and embedded into everyday practice.
Why Ongoing Competence Matters
Staff confidence can fade over time, particularly when first aid skills are rarely used. Inspectors increasingly look beyond certificates and ask how settings:
- maintain staff confidence
- support learning between qualifications
- reflect on real incidents
- ensure first aid arrangements remain appropriate for their setting
Our ongoing competence programme addresses this directly.
Learner Ongoing Competence Programme
This programme supports individual staff competence across the full qualification cycle and complements initial first aid training.
It focuses on confidence, skills retention, and learning from real incidents — not just compliance.
What the programme includes
- Regular MCQs and short knowledge refreshers
- An annual external 3-hour face-to-face practical refresher focused on confidence and skills retention
- Incident reflection with professional feedback following real first aid events
- The full paediatric first aid re-qualification in Year 3, with no additional course fee

Programme fees (per learner)
- Year 1 (post-qualification rate): £4.99 per learner per month
- Years 2 and 3: £7.49 per learner per month (includes the full re-qualification course in Year 3)
“As a Headteacher, I value training that prepares staff for real situations rather than simply meeting requirements.”
Headteacher, St Mary’s Catholic School, Deal, Kent
The Year 1 post-qualification rate is available only when the programme is taken out within 30 days of completing training.
Once enrolled, Years 2 and 3 are locked at £7.49 per learner per month for the duration of that qualification cycle.
Following re-qualification, programme fees may be reviewed for subsequent qualification cycles in line with inflation and service scope.
Participation in this programme is optional and offered as additional reassurance and support.
School First Aid Governance Support
Alongside individual staff competence, schools and early-years settings are responsible for ensuring that first aid arrangements across the setting are appropriate, proportionate, and inspection-ready.
This annual governance support is designed to protect the organisation rather than the individual learner.
What governance support includes
An annual visit and review tailored to the setting, including consideration of:
- numbers of pupils / children and staff
- age ranges and supervision needs
- staffing patterns across the day
- chronic conditions (e.g. asthma, allergies, epilepsy, diabetes)
- medication storage and access
- first aid kit placement and content
- alignment with policies and procedures
This is a supportive review, not an inspection or audit.
It helps leaders speak confidently about first aid arrangements during inspection and demonstrate reasonable, proportionate provision.
Governance support fees
- Standard rate: £495 per setting per year
- Post-training rate: £249 per setting per year
(available when taken out within 30 days of training)
Fees are reviewed annually in line with service scope.

A supportive, not punitive approach
Both the learner competence programme and governance support are designed to support and protect, not to criticise.
The focus is on:
- reassurance
- confidence
- continuous improvement
- inspection readiness
Many organisations recognise the value of ongoing competence but historically have struggled to implement it consistently. This framework provides a manageable, structured approach.
